Tyrant manager Barry Atwood threatens to sack his staff if they don’t work on Christmas Eve. This is the last straw for Barry’s bosses who confront Barry telling him that unless he can produce three character references by midnight Christmas Eve his job will be transferred to their remote Caribbean branch.
The next morning, Christmas Eve, Barry wakes up at the North Pole surrounded by various creatures, including his assigned pixie guide, Nimmy. Santa and the soon to retire Chief Helper advise Barry that he must find his Christmas spirit in order to save his job because the two are inextricably linked.
Barry tries to overcome the challenges of his location – no Internet or electricity, by preparing hand-written references in advance. He is confident he’ll keep his job and has avoided the requirement to obtain the Christmas spirit to do so. But frustratingly, Barry awakes the following morning at the North Pole, again on Christmas Eve. This is when Barry learns that at the North Pole, Christmas Eve repeats to enable Santa to deliver all of the presents in one night. It also means that Barry has until all of the presents are delivered to find his Christmas spirit or he’ll lose his job.
Chief Helper wannabe Stam plans to become Chief Helper by discrediting the other candidates. He steals Barry’s possessions and plants them in the rooms of the other senior helpers and also sabotages toys, apportioning blame on the other candidates as well as Barry.
Not knowing who framed him, Barry decides to help repair the damaged toys to ensure Santa meets the Christmas deadline.
Whilst Santa is away delivering presents, Barry discovers Stam’s plot and devises a clever way to alert Santa. Stam captures Barry and Nimmy sending them over the mountain cliff on a sleigh without reindeer.
Santa returns to find his sleighs damaged, toys damaged and Barry missing. Christmas is now in serious jeopardy.
Meanwhile, on the mountainside, Barry risks his life to save Nimmy. The pair begin climbing their way back up to the North Pole when they are rescued by a baseball playing Polar Bear, and Barry’s North Pole chess partner, the Abominable Snowman.
Barry makes the selfless decision to help Santa save Christmas and accept that his job will be transferred to the Caribbean.
Everyone works together to repair the sleighs, repair and complete the toys for Santa to deliver on time and save Christmas.
Using a ‘Christmas Miracle’ Santa gave to him earlier, Barry elects to buy a special present for his best friend Pina rather than use it to save his job.
Back in his home, Barry sits snuggled together with Pina, his resignation letter laying on the coffee table.
